⭐ 1A — Immediate Response Checklist

This checklist guides parents through the first minutes and hours after the school contacts you about an incident. It stabilises the situation, protects your legal rights, and prevents unlawful early collection.

1. Stabilise & Confirm Safety

Your first priority is confirming your child is safe and supported. Ask the school:

  • “Is my child safe right now?”
  • “Who is supervising them?”
  • “Are they distressed or calm?”
  • “Are they with a trusted adult?”

2. Gather the Five Essential Facts

Do not debate or respond emotionally—collect only factual baseline information:

  1. What happened?
  2. When did it occur?
  3. Where was your child?
  4. Who was supervising?
  5. What adjustments were in place?

3. Do NOT Agree to Anything on the Phone

You are not required to make decisions immediately. You may say:

“Thank you for calling. I won’t be making decisions until I receive the required documentation.”

4. Do Not Collect Your Child Unless It Is a Formal Suspension

If the school says, “You need to pick up your child,” ask:

  • “Is this a formal suspension under Ministerial Order 1125?”
  • “Has the principal made the decision?”
  • “Has the documentation been completed?”

If not, your child must remain supervised at school.

5. Request Written Information

Ask for a written summary including:

  • What occurred
  • Immediate safety steps
  • Supervision details
  • Adjustments in place
  • Whether suspension is being considered

6. Document the Phone Call

  • Time and date
  • Who called
  • Summary of what was said
  • Any requests made of you
  • Any safety concerns raised
