When a Reintegration Plan Is Needed

Reintegration planning is required whenever a student is returning after a disruption to their attendance, safety, or wellbeing. This includes:

  • suspension or exclusion
  • reduced or modified timetables
  • school-directed home stay or informal exclusion
  • severe incidents or unmanaged risk concerns
  • extended absence due to wellbeing, safety or conflict

A reintegration plan is about returning safely, restoring dignity, and setting the student up for success.

Reintegration Plan — Step-by-Step

1. Clarify the Reason for Reintegration

Schools must clearly explain why a reintegration plan is needed. If this has not been communicated, ask for it in writing.

Common reasons:

  • a safety, wellbeing or behavioural incident
  • a period of reduced attendance
  • a breakdown in previous supports
  • completing a risk or incident review

If the reason is unclear → request clarification before planning begins.

2. Identify Barriers & What the Student Needs

Reintegration fails when the student is sent back into the same environment without addressing what caused the issue.

Use the 2E Adjustment Audit to identify:

  • environment barriers
  • missing adjustments
  • sensory, social or cognitive needs
  • predictability and communication needs
  • supervision, transitions or workload issues

Reintegration *must* be barrier-based — not behaviour-based.

3. Create the Reintegration Plan

A reintegration plan is a short, clear document that specifies what the school will do to support a safe return.

The plan must include:

  • Start date and review date
  • Adjusted timetable (if needed)
  • Agreed adjustments based on the 2E Audit
  • Environmental supports (yard, classroom, transitions)
  • Communication plan for parents & staff
  • Predictability supports (visuals, routines, scripts)
  • Supervision arrangements (if applicable)
  • Point of contact for issues or changes

Families are equal partners in creating the plan.

4. Agree on Review Dates

Reintegration plans must be monitored — not left open-ended.

  • initial review: after 1–2 weeks
  • secondary review: after 4–6 weeks
  • final review: confirm stability or extend supports

Every review must be recorded in writing.

5. Monitor Implementation (Critical Step)

The plan must be consistently implemented by all staff — not just created and filed.

  • staff are aware of their responsibilities
  • adjustments occur as agreed
  • predictability tools are used reliably
  • environmental supports are in place
  • student feedback is recorded

A reintegration plan is only successful if implemented every day.
