Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about Strategic Self-Advocacy™.

What is Strategic Self-Advocacy™?

Strategic Self-Advocacy™ (SSA™) is a structured, capacity-building coaching program that supports NDIS participants to develop practical self-advocacy, communication, and decision-making skills. The program focuses on building independence and confidence so participants can better express their needs, make informed choices, and engage with services and community settings.

Who is Strategic Self-Advocacy™ suitable for?

SSA™ is suitable for participants who:

  • Experience difficulty expressing their needs or preferences
  • Rely heavily on Support Coordination for everyday decisions
  • Require support to engage confidently in education, employment, or community settings
  • Are transitioning toward greater independence
  • Wish to strengthen individual or systemic advocacy skills

How is Strategic Self-Advocacy™ different from Support Coordination?

Strategic Self-Advocacy™ does not replace Support Coordination. Support Coordination focuses on plan implementation and service navigation, while SSA™ focuses on building the participant's own capacity to self-advocate, communicate, and make decisions. The two supports can complement each other, with SSA™ reducing long-term reliance on coordination over time.

Which NDIS funding categories can be used?

SSA™ is delivered under Capacity Building Supports and may be funded through relevant categories such as:

  • Improved Daily Living
  • Increased Social & Community Participation
  • Improved Relationships
  • Finding & Keeping a Job
  • Transition Through School & Further Education
  • Psychosocial Recovery Coaching

Funding is determined by participant goals and plan inclusions.

Is Strategic Self-Advocacy™ considered therapy?

No. Strategic Self-Advocacy™ is not a clinical or therapeutic intervention. It is a capacity-building coaching program focused on skill development, confidence, and functional communication. It does not provide diagnosis, treatment, or clinical therapy.

How does Strategic Self-Advocacy™ support NDIS goals?

SSA™ supports participants to work toward NDIS goals by building practical skills that enable them to participate more independently in planning, decision-making, education, employment, and community life. Outcomes focus on increased confidence, improved communication, and greater self-direction.

How is participant progress measured?

Progress is monitored through structured goal-setting, reflective tools, and pre- and post-program reviews aligned with recognised advocacy and capacity-building frameworks. Reporting focuses on functional skill development and participant outcomes.

How do I make a referral?

Support Coordinators and referrers can submit referrals using the online referral and intake form available at:

Understanding Your Rights Under the NDIS

The NDIS can be powerful — but only when participants have access to accurate information and fair processes. Below is a clear, accessible explanation of your rights and what you can do when decisions don't reflect your needs.

You Have the Right to Ask for Clear Reasons

Every NDIS decision must be based on the law, your evidence, and your individual situation. If a decision doesn't make sense, or if the reasoning feels generic or unclear, you have the right to ask for a detailed explanation. This is called a Request for Reasons, and it is one of the most powerful tools participants can use.

You Can Challenge Any NDIS Decision

If you disagree with a decision — funding, supports, reports, budgets, categories, or the way your needs were interpreted — you can challenge it. The process can be confusing, but it exists to protect your rights. Self-advocacy helps you move through this process with clarity and confidence.

You Are Allowed to Provide Your Own Evidence

The NDIS must consider any evidence you give them — especially reports that describe your functional needs, safety concerns, communication needs, mobility supports, independence goals, therapy requirements, and daily living barriers. You are allowed to submit:

  • therapy reports
  • letters from practitioners
  • support logs
  • daily living descriptions
  • risk information
  • photos of equipment or home adjustments
  • your own written explanation

Strong, well-structured evidence is one of the most reliable ways to change an NDIS outcome — and self-advocacy helps you present it clearly.

Reviews, Variations and Appeals — What's the Difference?

Many people feel overwhelmed by the different pathways. Here's a simple explanation:

Internal Review: Ask the NDIS to look at a decision again.
Change in Circumstances: When something important in your life has changed.
Plan Variation: Request specific changes to your current plan.
AAT Appeal: If the internal review is still not correct and you want an independent body to review it.

Each pathway has rules, timelines and requirements — and the wording matters. Advocacy helps you choose the right pathway and explain your situation clearly.

You Don't Need to Fight the NDIS Alone

It is completely normal to feel confused, exhausted or unsure how to communicate your needs. The NDIS contains technical language, legal rules, administrative pathways and strict evidence thresholds — none of which participants are ever taught. With support, you can navigate it confidently.

Self-Advocacy Isn't About Fighting — It's About Being Heard

Self-advocacy gives you tools, clarity and structure so you can communicate your needs in ways that the system understands. It is respectful, evidence-based and grounded in your rights as a participant. The goal isn't conflict — the goal is fairness.

If you've been unsure where to begin, this service was built for you.

Clear guidance. Respect. Evidence-based support. Self-advocacy that helps your voice be heard.
